Retro FPS game with cyberpunk aesthetics

Turbo Overkill is a premium action game for PC developed by folks over at Trigger Happy Interactive. It is a first-person shooter with retro pixel graphics and a futuristic cyberpunk theme. In it, players will take on the mission of destroying a rogue AI looking to dominate the city.

Inspired by games like Quake 4 and Doom Eternal, Turbo Overkill is all about fast-paced shooter action, with an emphasis on movement as players slide, shoot, and wall run past enemies. There is also a demo version available that serves as a nice preview of what can be expected gameplay-wise.

Mutants, neon lights, and a chainsaw

In Turbo Overkill, you play as Johnny Turbo who returns to his hometown of Paradise only to find its entire population is possessed by a rogue AI called Syn. He then takes on the impossible job of taking down the city's twisted overlord and earning some cash. There is competition, though, as bounty hunters look to cash in on the reward, as well.

Of course, you have a few tricks up your sleeve in the form of arm rockets and a chainsaw leg. You also have other toys to play with as you blast enemies with the Twin Magnums, Boomer Shotgun, or the Telefragger sniper rifle. Free-flowing movement and traversal are at the core of the gameplay, and you have your trusty grappling hook and the ability to wall run to help.

Taking cues from classic action titles, it also features Turbo Time, which is its own take on slow motion, but with a twist. Just a couple of things before you get started. The first is that the game is quite skill-based and you might encounter a steep difficulty curve at first. The second is that it's still in early access, so it's far from being complete yet.

Welcome to the chainsaw club

It may still be in early access butTurbo Overkill is already shaping up to be one of the best releases of 2022. Free-flowing combat, kickass weapons, and a brutal pixel rendition of cyberpunk dystopia, all contribute to a first-person shooter that is just so fun and satisfying to play. If you're a fan of Doom and Quake, then definitely give this one a try.
